Overlooking the Gulf of Kvarner, Opatija (Abbazia) is located at the foot of Monte Maggiore (1400m) and is 70km from Trieste. It 's the most important city on the eastern coast of Istria and the most important tourist center, busy all year round and folk theater, concerts, operas, exhibitions, and many with excellent sports and leisure facilities, delicious restaurants.
With over twenty hotels of excellent quality Opatija is one of the main tourist centers of Croatia and the proximity of a large city (Rijeka) is "busy" even outside the main tourist season and is worth visiting even in low season or winter .

Born and grown up around the Benedictine abbey of St. James - by which it is named - Opatija became an important tourist center in the nineteenth century through the end of the construction of the railway Vienna-Trieste (1857). This period begins the construction of tourist facilities, holiday villas, beaches and parks.
All along the coast there are numerous shops and, for athletes, in addition to conventional equipment, remember Preluk bay, surfers paradise: there are organized competitions in water skiing and sailing. The nightlife is sure to be plenty of bars, discos, dance terraces, two casinos and, for gourmets, gastronomic evenings!
